NORTH CIRCULAR

Luke McManus’ documentary musical journeys along Dublin’s North Circular Road, encountering its inhabitants, and hearing their stories and songs.

It stretches, in a shallow arch, from the east side of Phoenix Park to the junction of Summerhill and Portland Row, near the docks. It’s the working-class community of the northern part of the Irish capital and its rich culture and traditions are evident in McManus’ rewarding travelogue. The distance he journeys may not be great, but his film passes through generations of musical history, drawing heavily on a wealth of folk and traditional songwriting. Shot in beautifully atmospheric black and white, and revelling in storytelling and musical performances in equal measure, North Circular is a joyous love letter to Dublin.
