Paper Panther

The Bird and the Whale is a story about a young whale struggling to find his voice. After straying too far from his family to explore a shipwreck, he discovers it’s sole survivor, a caged songbird. Together they struggle to survive lost at sea.

Paper Panther's first short, The Bird & the Whale, directed by Carol Freeman, was created using a near obsolete form of animation – paint-on-glass. It’s seven minutes are made up of over 4300 A1 sized oil paintings and took five painters thirteen months to paint. It was also created by a majority female team.  This 'making of' video gives an insight into the painstaking and highly creative process in making this stunning piece.

It has received over 50 awards and nominations, including a Silver Screen award at the Young Director Awards at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity and it has screened at many prestigious festivals around the world.
