There are four spots of the latest in a long line of successful commercials made for the Road Safety Authority by Lyle Bailie International. These spots, directed by Brian Durnin of Red Rage Films and edited by Lee Hickey, took a different approach by moving away from the shock value of previous ads and concentrating on the testimonies of those left behind after road crashes.
Rather than featuring dramatizations of car collisions and accident scenes, it was felt that a more documentary-style approach featuring real people and not actors playing a part would have far more impact. With this in mind the commercials are of a much slower pace and feature close up talking heads of the subjects where possible as well as photographs of the deceased relatives of the subjects.
This allows the charged emotion of the piece to create a connection with the audience.
The final result is highly poignant and will hopefully force some people to examine their actions on the road.
